The 83-year-old singer then shared the inspiration behind the song, revealing, “My wife was dying of lung cancer. I was always able to fix stuff, you know? I was always there for her, but she said, ‘You can’t crumble with me. Don’t fall with me. You must carry on and do what you do.’
“Tom’s emotion was palpable as he continued, “When I heard it, I thought, ‘My God, this thing is like it was written for this situation.’ It’s a lovely song.” Anne-Marie was moved to tears, and Will.i.am thanked Tom for sharing his story.
Tom’s wife, Linda, passed away in 2016 after battling lung cancer. The couple had been married since 1957. After her death, Tom sold their Los Angeles mansion and moved back to the UK, residing in a London flat as Linda had suggested.
