Melissa McCarthy was constantly being called names and attacked for her weight. She responded to the criticism gracefully, but she never lets anyone walk over her. Her husband always supports her by praising her for how wonderful she is.
Despite constant bullying and criticism, Melissa McCarthy was one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses in 2015. Her solo movies during that time made her one of the most recognizable female actors. The actress also tried her hand at directing.
Amid her success, McCarthy stayed humble. She opened up about her success and said she’s just happy to have work as an actress. She admitted that acting is generally a highly competitive industry, and making it big is often difficult, if not impossible.
Despite being the world’s third highest-paid female actress, according to financial profiles, McCarthy’s weight has been judged by fans and critics alike. The actress responded by questioning why so many women in the public eye are being evaluated in terms of their physical fitness while the same standards don’t apply to men. When a critic noted she had lost weight, she replied:
“I have, but I’ll be back again. I’ll be up, I’ll be down, probably for the rest of my life. There are so many more intriguing things about women than their butt or their this or their that. It can’t be the first question every time, or a question at all.”
McCarthy also hopes to inspire women and build them up, since so many things try to bring them down. The actress started an all-sizes clothing brand to help women feel more comfortable in their own skin. She believes in loving yourself the way you are.
McCarthy lives by the notion that you should do things that make you feel comfortable, even if others scoff at you for it. At the 2019 Golden Globes, the “Spy” star snuck in 30 ham sandwiches to enjoy and pass around. She also showed she eats what she likes during an SNL Pizza sketch.
Criticized for Her Weight
It’s no wonder McCarthy knows how to deal with people looking down on her. Throughout her career, she has faced numerous attempts from people to take the wind out of her sails. The harassment has only toughened her up and taught her how to handle bullies. Many still try to ridicule her, though.
In a review of her movie “Identity Thief,” one critic made several cruel comments about her weight and appearance, outright dismissing her acting abilities and describing her as “tractor-sized,” a “screeching, humongous creep,” and a “female hippo.’”
The “God’s Favourite Idiot” actor regularly showers his wife with compliments, and romantic gifts to boot.
Despite the negative commentary, McCarthy keeps doing what she loves and takes the blows gracefully. She often refuses to let criticism get to her. Instead, the comedian opts for dismissive replies.
McCarthy also doesn’t hide her figure. She chooses to wear what makes her comfortable to red-carpet events, and she’s proud to be who she is. Her fans and coworkers all support her as best they can, while she has her biggest fan at home.
Husband Showers Her with Love
McCarthy’s husband, Ben Falcone, is also an actor, but more importantly, he’s her biggest supporter. The two first met while Falcone was still in high school, and McCarthy was a freshman in college. In 1998, they met again, and they settled down in 2005. On their 15th anniversary, Falcone wrote in an Instagram post:
“Two things: A) I’m so lucky and grateful to be married to such a lovely, smart, kind and wonderful person B) why is there a skunk in the picture? Happy fifteenth Anniversary, Mooch! Here’s to 500 more (I am assuming we will kinda be robots for 400 of those years).”
The “God’s Favourite Idiot” actor regularly showers his wife with compliments, including describing her as the “most wonderful person in the world.” The couple shares two children, Vivian and Georgette Falcone. McCarthy is happy to have her family, who support her no matter what.
For the married pair’s 13th wedding anniversary, things went slightly awry. But Falcone was still there with sweet words and a surprise waiting for his wife. Instead of getting something romantic, McCarthy decided to get him a phone for the elderly as a joke. Meanwhile, he got her something special. McCarthy recalled:
“[He bought me] two beautiful rings, one that said ‘love.’ And I gave him a Jitterbug phone. I need to work on my romance skills, I think.”
Even though it seems like she dropped the ball with the Jitterbug phone, it looks like the couple is happy enough. They are comedians, after all, so it’s likely the joke didn’t go over his head. Their two daughters were apparently appalled by the cellular monstrosity.
McCarthy and Falcone are still doing sweet, silly things together, from getting the other one deviled eggs for Valentine’s instead of chocolates to dressing up in tracksuits for the Vanity Fair Oscars party. And Falcone still supports McCarthy, no matter what.
